Online Assessments - Trysts and Trials

It is rightfully said by Carol Ann Tomlinson, "Assessment is today's means of modifying tomorrow's instruction". It is an integral aspect of the education cycle and the image below sums it all.

Further, it helps in the following parameters as per UNESCO

Given the current situation, the paramount question is how to assess students on a virtual platform objectively and ensuring students have used fair means. We are also a nation dealing with numbers and thus the primary question is, 'How to cater to a huge number of students using a minimum of resources?
We, at school, are using MS Teams but also dabble with other platforms including our in- house school portal. With discussion with many more educators, I am aware that people are using platforms like Google, Flipgrid, Zoom, Kahoot, or Mentimeter or own school portals and each one has their strengths and shortcomings.

These platforms allow us to ask a variety of questions but how are teachers using it for long assessments especially an essay or letter.
In our school, we are using MS Teams which offers Forms which can accommodate both formative and short answers and Assignments where you could upload a paper, have your student download, solve and turn it in but the vital question is how do you verify it is your own student attempting the paper and not the support system which is a similar question with all other platforms.

The concern is definitely not with the platforms, creating, uploading papers, and correction on every platform can be handled by any smart teacher. The real concern was the execution and the scenario at home where we had minimum control.

So, collectively our teachers brainstormed with Heads regularly as we were attempting assessments with over 1500 students. A week was given for mock assessments to analyze the loopholes and plug them for the final evaluation. The shortcomings were as follows:
1. The link to the paper was shared with students on time but due to varying bandwidths, some papers having images would open late and students would panic.
2. Certain papers like Literature or Language had to be downloaded, solved and the file or image either uploaded. The uploading took ages and students missed the deadlines.
3. The correction for teachers was extensive as they spent more screen time and their eyes were hurting.
4. In some papers where marks were automatically shared after submission, students who had given correct answers had their marks deducted because the answers had their ''case'' changed or in Math, the format changed. Ex:
It takes Julia 1/2 hour to wash, comb her hair, and put on her clothes, and 1/4 hour to have her breakfast. How much time does it take Julia to be ready for school? (2 points)

"3/4Hr"
"3/4 hr" or "45 minutes "
If the student had written both responses the computer gave it wrong because the teacher had not fed the varied possibilities. So, every paper had to be scrutinized before giving it to students. We had to control automatic marks hand out.

5. Both students and parents felt emotionally stressed and it reflected in their approach to assessments. Few parents wanted it discontinued but we were relentless and today they are satisfied.

So, the following week, we had further meetings to strengthen the process.
1. The paper pattern ensured that Bloom's taxonomy leading to HOTS was given more leverage. The student would not find the response directly in any textbook, he had to think.

2. Our Unit Test paper of 20 marks was split into two parts:
1. Objective done through MS Forms
2. Subjective done through Assignment.
Students had time denoted for both and felt assured that one paper was not deciding their understanding.

3. Assessment guidelines were created for every single class, courtesy hard work of the VP and Section Heads along with teachers so that parents had clarity and awareness of the expectations.

3. During the assessment, the student's videos were on. Every class had two teachers invigilating who would pin children and observe their work. We also had the virtual backdrop removed to gauge whether there was anyone seated beside the child.

3. After the assessment, we followed up with a Viva wherein the teacher would call the student from the classroom and have a 1:1 interaction to assess student's learning. The questions would be different from the paper and differ from student to student so that no parroting happened. All the extra efforts helped us understand who actually took up the assessment sincerely and mark them accordingly.

The teachers are now busy correcting the papers and will turn in the responses soon. Next week they will be ready for an Open House on a virtual platform sharing 1:1 feedback. Truly hats off to the dedicated teachers and amazing Heads for working much beyond their time to ensure a fair evaluation. A physical evaluation would normally take 40 minutes to complete and then mechanically everyone would move on to regular class timetable but a virtual one took hours of executing assessments which included viva plus regular teaching.

Honestly, when I hear people dismissing virtual classrooms, I feel like offering a free internship to them to experience this process for only a week and then pass judgment.

Success comes when everyone feels the pulse and works collectively and that is what is transpiring in every school all over the world. Educators have not only moved on to teaching but also assessing, conducting online events and activities not only within the school but also interschool and simultaneously connected with parents to support student's learning curve. It somehow feels as if school never shut for a single day but seamlessly went for a makeover.

Note: We are on a journey to improve our assessments and would welcome more ideas and suggestions.

Why history? Learn about rulers and their machinations

History has always fascinated me be it the Roman empire or the Egyptian or Greek. It gives a deep insight as to how the ruler's mindset, ambitions, conflicts, power struggles, power victories, and lifestyles shape up the nation.

If you read the history of Rome, you see it going from a Republic to an Empire after the death of Julius Caesar in 31 BC. Augustus was Rome's first Emperor and he was successful. A series of emperors succeeded him, some good like Antoninus Piussome wicked like Nero, and some completely insane and cruel like Caligula.

One such ruler was Marcus Aurelius ruled Rome from 161 to 180 AD, also known as the last of the 'Five Good Emperors'. He ruled with absolute power under the guidance of wisdom and virtue. His reign wasn't easy, he faced wars with the Parthian Empire, the barbarian tribes, the rise of Christianity as well as the plague that killed many. Everywhere, he placed himself on the front line leading people along with the Senate to believe in him. He was not a direct descendant of the throne but was selected by the Emperor for his prodigious capabilities.

He had a son, Commodus whom he trained himself but he knew from the very beginning that Commodus did not have the proficiency or potential within himself to lead a nation. Nevertheless, on his deathbed, he named Commodus as his successor and lo and behold, it marked the end of the Golden period of the Roman Empire. Commodus changed the name of Rome to Colonia Commodiana (Colony of Commodus), imagined he was God Hercules, entered the Colosseum to fight as a gladiator, and winning by giving his opponents a blunt sword. Eventually, he was murdered by his own people. A case of 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely'.

If you visit France during the period of Louis IV who became the king in 1643, began ruling from 1660 till his death in 1715 AD. He was obsessed with the power and shifted his empire to Versailles from Paris. His palace was initially a hunting lodge converted to an opulent palace built especially to impress.

He was an absolute monarch and wanted all nobles to relinquish their power and bow to him. He married for power and had countless Mistresses giving him many children. He was a devout Catholic and in 1680's he generated immense hostility among his people by enforcing religious uniformity among his people. He was intolerant to Protestants and many people fled France to seek religious freedom. The taxations were high for the locals and the nobles were exempted. In seeking glory for himself considering himself as Sun King he neglected the needs of his people and it is said that when his body was being carried, the citizens booed the king.

These two rulers have stood out to me because each one had a long reign so they had ample time to analyze their country, understand the people and its need.

Emperor Marcus was a philosopher and a great military warrior who fought on the front lines. He could see through his son knowing undoubtedly that he was incapable both on the battlefield and in the senate but still passed on power to someone who was capable of misusing it completely and Commodus does just that. That simple act speaks volumes. Somehow it is difficult for a ruler to tear himself apart from the role of a father and that act can spell disaster. We have seen it in our own Mahabharata with Dhritarashtra whose blind love for his son Duryodhana gets millions killed in the great war. Even today, we see the same scene being repeated time and again with political dynasties and business empires.

King Louis was young when he became the King and easily influenced. He lacked experience and more concerned with outside beauty than internal peace and happiness and therefore focussed more on Versailles and battles and taxation. Every woman he developed an affection for swayed him towards their visions and that spelled doom for him. His ego, his need for dominance made him bring everyone to kneel before him, and soon one develops a 'YES' community around them. Isn't that exactly what we observe with many leaders across the globe? They begin ruling as Dictators and the nation has lost a voice. Within years, it would give an uprise to civil wars, and tensions and power will exchange hands.

I truly believe that if you wish to understand a person or a nation or its people then study its history because that has shaped, conditioned, and honed the personality, vision, and structure of the person and place. In fact, national cultures have shaped the corporate structures too. As per the paper written by Mohammed Ayub Khan and Laurie Smith on 'The Role of National cultures in shaping the corporate Management structures: A three-country Theoretical Analysis: The American national culture is recognized as being individualistic, freedom-oriented and competitive. Thus, they easily accept consumerism and materialism.
Ex: Japan is a very peace-loving country but it wasn't so during the World War II. After the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks, it shifted its perspective, focussing more on building itself and the nation.
People in France can speak English but do not wish to. Why?
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world? Ever wondered why? Check out its conquests and earlier empires.
Appreciate the history and soon you will be building bridges and shaping futures.

I want my old life back

Call me vain but I wish to wake up and think of what to wear and how to dress. I want to look in the mirror and have my husband glancing my way, sharing his approval.

I want to think of what to pack in my tiffin and slyly add in titbits to make me feel good.

I long to get in my car and drive to work, cursing offenders and blaming traffic along the way. I wish to enter the school and see children running, shouting, studying, laughing, making excuses to visit the canteen and hear their inane stories.
I miss my reception greeting me as I enter the office and offering me a cup of hot, delicious tea. I am waiting to meet my Vice Principal, Supervisors and hear them share their challenges and triumphs.
I miss seeing my teachers joyous on conducting an efficient class and the anguish for inability to handle class discipline. I yearn to see the school physically back in action with movement, noise all around with chirpiness in every corner waiting at the end of the day to connect with my Management to share new updates.

I ache for the evenings where I drive back to home, stopping at places to fill in my daily home needs, entering my home and seeing my son working out. I crave to catch up with my friends on my daily gossip, discussing new fashion trends, movies, places to travel and dine. I pray that after long physical hours at work, I enjoy those few moments of movie shows, internet surfing, waiting for my husband to return home from work.

I look forward to those precious moments where my spouse and I shared our day routine, where I bicker on my son’s study habits, traffic and demanding people and where I am offered gyan which 75% of the time is discarded, where we end the day to begin another. I hunger for those weekends which actually meant ‘NO WORK DAY” and plan short trips to my father, my friends and of course my parlour. How I hunger for the roadside paanipuris, bhel, sandwiches which we ate as customary part of our shopping in the market and crossed people right , left and centre to reach our destinations?

How much I miss those days which had seemed so regular, where we hugged each other to demonstrate love and touched each other without a thought?

My prayers are very simple and request the higher reality to please hear them,

“God, I am very regular so please grant me those regular days back so that I cherish all of them once again. Yes, I promise to become more responsible towards nature and environment. Yes, I have learned to become more technologically savvy and will be better prepared for future crisis management but now let Corona go. She has taught us enough for this lifetime.”

Corona - Let's fight its shelf life on Earth

I somehow marvel at life. Last week we were working 8 to 10 hours balancing 10th and 12th exams along with school inspection, sensitizing students , planning for next academic year and today we are completely house bound. Earlier, where our perspective in life was inclined towards work and growth, now shifted to basic survival. The earth is so large, its surface area is 510,072,000 square kilometers but now every inch appears  a risk zone. How could a virus measuring from 60 nm [1nm = 10-9 m] to 140 nm control us completely? Who gave it the power to cripple us globally? Today majority of people are glued to the television sets listening to news and updates, panic has become a way of life.

My entire daily routine has changed incredibly. Now, I don the hat of a cook, domestic help, homemaker and professional as we all are even working from home ensuring teaching learning is not stopping for any one. Given the situation, I doubt anyone might be even opening their laptops or books. I am sure everyone's profile is along similar lines as every building committee has ensured minimum people enter the premise to keep it safe and secure which I wholeheartedly support. So, as I am sitting in my balcony in the afternoon reflecting on the past few weeks, there are some things which has hit the bull's eye. Do let me know the impact it has had on you.
1. We boasted of being technologically savvy, medically progressive and military wise superhuman then how come we fell to our knees in front of this virus? What deeper message is this pandemic sending us? I personally love this video and hope you do too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZmaSZjYzww
2. We always desired vacations and holidays but how come staying at home seems more of work than a vacation. Seriously, I am awaiting the day I go out in the market and see it bustling with people rushing towards their tasks or perhaps just a stroll on the beach. The fresh air and human touch MATTERS.
3. We believe that people who are completing their studies are educated but when you see people evading the truth, socializing, taking a paracetamol before their flights landing to lower body temperatures, you wonder, 'Are they?'  Today, I wish to rephrase and say they might be qualified but definitely not educated. True education teaches one to value every single body on earth.

So, it reaffirms that somewhere our value education system is weak and needs strong redirection. I request the respective education boards to assign it somewhere in the Board exams as we all are so mark driven, if we do not see it as a subject, we never study.
Further, every religious, social organization to use the establishments further for inculcating and strengthening these values within the larger community. Humanity is important, cooperation and support is profound and not simply ringing a bell or bowing down.

I am no magician just a simple educator. I do not know the future and neither do most but I do know that the theory of Karma holds true, you reap what you sow and everything that goes around comes around. So, send positive thoughts to the universe because theory of reflection says angle of incidence = angle of reflection and the same amount of positive reactions will be reflected back.
Together, we have a huge ground to cover but we will as the resounding claps of 22nd March was evident proof for those few minutes truly seemed spiritual. Nature is supreme and very soon the vaccine will be available for one and all.
